WEB FORMS AND CAPTCHA

I don’t think there are many of us who don’t know about spam. Matter of fact, most of us know quit about spam when in reality we’d all probably like to know less about it - especially when it comes to our own inbox. There are a lot of different ways to cut down on spam and one way is to use CAPTCHA on a website where a form is used. By form, I mean those areas on the website where you key in and submit information like your email address.

Right about now you might be wondering what does CAPTCHA stand for and what does a CAPTCHA do? First, the term CAPTCHA stands for (Completely Automated Public Turing Test To Tell Computers and Humans Apart). Second, CAPTCHA code was created to stop automated computer spam robots from filling out forms on websites, harvesting email addresses, and then sending out countless spam emails.

You’ve had to use them many times before and probably didn’t even know what it was or why it was even there on the page. Ever remember going to a website where you filled out the online form and before you hit the submit button you were required to key in a series of characters or words, then press submit? That’s CAPTCHA security!

The CAPTCHA security image works by asking the website visitor to type in a code they see correctly. A human can do this, but an automated computer program cannot. This keeps your email address safe from spammers and additional spam from hitting your inbox.

This is why just about all the big, well known websites are using them, like MSN, Yahoo, Google, Craigslist, and countless others.

WHAT CAPTCHA PROGRAM DO WE USE?

When my clients want a web form on their site, it will always be installed with CAPTCHA. There are a number of them out there; I prefer using ReCAPTCHA owned by Google.
